Dorm Room Bedding Checklist: Everything You Actually Need

Move-in day is coming fast. Between figuring out your roommate situation, hauling boxes up three flights of stairs, and trying to remember where you packed your phone charger, the last thing you want is to realize you forgot something for your bed.

We've put together the definitive dorm room bedding checklist — everything you actually need (and a few things you definitely don't).

The Essentials

✅ Twin XL Sheets (x2)

Most dorm beds are Twin XL — not regular Twin. This trips up a lot of first-year students. Get two sets so you always have a clean pair while the other is in the wash. Look for breathable, easy-care fabrics. Our Bamboo Bed Set by Bedly is designed specifically for dorm life: soft, temperature-regulating, and machine washable.

✅ Pillow(s)

Bring at least two pillows — one for sleeping, one for sitting up in bed to study (it happens more than you think). Check if your dorm provides a pillow or if you need to bring your own.

✅ Comforter or Duvet

A medium-weight comforter works for most climates. If your dorm runs hot (many do), a lighter option like a bamboo duvet insert is a game-changer for hot sleepers.

✅ Mattress Topper (Optional but Recommended)

Dorm mattresses are notoriously uncomfortable. A 2–3 inch memory foam or bamboo topper can make a huge difference in sleep quality — and sleep quality matters more in college than you think.

✅ Mattress Pad or Protector

Protect yourself (and your deposit) from whatever happened on that mattress before you. A waterproof mattress protector is a must.

The Thing Nobody Tells You About

✅ Bed Straps or Bed Connectors

If you're bunking or lofting your bed, or if your dorm has a split bed frame, you've probably already heard horror stories about beds that slide apart in the middle of the night. Bedly Straps are the easiest fix — no tools, no work orders, no zip ties. They keep your bed frame together so you can actually sleep.

This is one of those things you don't know you need until 2am when your bed splits in half. Just get them now.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Throw blanket — for lounging, studying, or when your roommate cranks the AC
  • Bed risers — creates under-bed storage (check your dorm's rules first)
  • Lap desk — for studying in bed (no judgment)
  • Clip-on reading light — for late nights when your roommate is asleep

What You Don't Need

  • A full/queen comforter (it'll hang off the sides and look messy)
  • Decorative throw pillows (you'll run out of space fast)
  • Expensive bedding you're afraid to wash frequently — dorm life is messy, your sheets need to be washable

The Bedly Dorm Bundle

If you want to check off most of this list in one shot, the Bamboo Bed Set by Bedly covers your sheets, pillowcases, and more — made from 100% organic bamboo that stays cool, soft, and fresh wash after wash. Pair it with Bedly Straps to keep your bed frame locked in place all semester.

You've got enough to worry about in college. Your bed shouldn't be one of them.
